Clubs close to Milan

With two massive clubs in Milan it's no surprise they dominate all things football in the city limits.

However, it only takes a swift trip out on Italy's public transport network to reach out to a good selection of clubs competing in the top two flights. Here's a few ideas:

Novara Calcio - the city of Novara is just 45 minutes on the fast train between Milan and Turin. Buses 4 to 8 from the train station go to Viale Kennedy outside the stadium. Or it's a 30 minute walk. Check out our guide to getting to and around Novara.

Atalanta and US Albino Leffe  - both clubs are based in the 24,500 Stadio Atleti stadium in Bergamo, a city which is the site of one of Milan's three airports. The trains run hourly to Bergamo from Milan, taking around an hour. Take bus 9/C or 9/BATB from the bus station in Via Bartolomeo Bono to the stadium 2 miles.

Brescia Calcio - The quickest trains to Brescia from Milan take just 45 minutes and they're regular too, half hourly at times but hourly most of the time. The Stadio Mario  Rigamonti is a good 3 miles from Brescia station so hop on the metro from the main station and go half a dozen stops north to Mompiano, the stadium is 200 yards from there.

Juventus -  Trains to Turin take a little under or over an hour, depending on whether you get the express train or not.  Juventus' 41,000 capacity new stadium is on the northern edge of the city so take the underground from Porta Nuova or Porta Susa station to Bernini, where match day shuttle buses, er, shuttle you to the new stadium. Buses 62, 72 and 75 go to the stadium. A city transport ticket costs one euro each way, covering you for 70 minutes on all transport.

Torino - As with Juventus, trains to Turin take roughly an hour. Torino play at the 28,000 capacity Stadio Olympico. From Torino Porta Susa or Torino Dora, take Tram 10 to Fermata 388/ Sebastopoli.

Verona - The regular train takes an hour and 20 minutes directly to Verona, making this a possible day trip from Milan. From the main Porta Nuova station it's a 15 minute walk to the 44,800 capacity Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

AS Varese -  Varese, on paper close to Milan but very tricky to reach by train, expect a two to three hour journey. AS Varese play at the 8,000  capacity Stadio Franco Ossola,  around two miles from Varese main station.
