Bremen: the city
For Guinness think Dublin. For Heineken think Amsterdam. For Beck's, think Bremen.
Yep, Bremen in Germany is written across every single one of the green bottles it produces. More than seven million of them a day, in fact, as the city's most famous business Beck & Co Brewery exports its world-famous beer around the world.
The old town (Aldstadt) and the winding lanes of the compact Schnoor district are picture postcard stuff but Bremen is no cliched tourist trap. It's a working town that accepts, rather than embraces visitors.
There's enough help for the poor English visitor to feel welcome, but not so much that you think you're treading a well-worn route. You'll be mixing with the locals more than outsiders.
Think Sheffield or Leeds. And before I get a shed-load of abuse from Yorkshire, that's a compliment.
At the heart of the Aldstadt is a town square perfect for chilling out in - admiring the stunning Rathaus and also the staple for any Germany city, the cathedral.

There are an amazing number of places to visit. It's teeming with museums - from art galleries and city museums through to a state of the Science Museum and even a Space Centre.
Bremerhaven is the port just a short train journey away which has enough to amuse you for a day too.
Most of the hotels are centrally based and you can navigate the majority of the city on foot. What you can't, is easily accessible by tram including the airport.
Two or three days is spot on for a break by the river Weser - complimented, of course, by a trip to the Weser Stadion. You'll have fun.
